All of us here at BITS have a  passion for horses and very strong beliefs in what our organization represents. We volunteer countless hours of our time to make this program a great success. Operating a program such as ours is very costly. We are in constant search of ideas on how to fund our organization. We are always open to suggestions. Please contact us with any ideas you may have - we would love to hear from you!

WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY COST?

This is a question we are frequently asked. We have broken down our costs of essential items used on a daily basis.

BALE OF HAY: $3.50    BALE OF ALFALFA: $5.50    TRIPLE CROWN SENIOR GRAIN: $17.29 (50 pound bag)

BLUE SEAL CARB GUARD: $13.49 (50 pound bag)   SENTINEL PERFORMANCE (BLUE SEAL): $16.59 (50 pound bag)

SENTINEL LIFETIME (BLUE SEAL): $17.49 (50 pound bag) OMELENE 400 (PURINA): $12.29 (40 pound bag)

FARR XTN (NUTRENA): $21.39 (50 pound bag) EMPOWER (NUTRENA): $23.39 (50 pound bag)

SAFE CHOICE (NUTRENA): $13.49 (50 pound bag) BEET PULP: $17.99 (40 pound bag)

WOOD SHAVINGS: $5.75 (per bag) STRAW: $3.75 (per bale) PELLET BEDDING: $6.00 (per bag)

We then must add in the cost of farrier care which can run $25 to $145 PER HORSE every 6 to 8 weeks depending on needs. Yearly visit with vet for coggins/vaccinations $225 PER HORSE. If an emergency arises and we must have an emergency call into the vet, figure $300 and up depending on emergency. Let's also not forget about supplements and medications - at our facility, the CHEAPEST medication given on a daily basis is $178 per month for one horse!

We are ALWAYS at full capacity (16 horses) at our facility. On average, it runs between $200 - $300 PER MONTH/ PER HORSE. With this many mouths to feed/supplement/medicate, there often is little left over for much needed repairs/improvements at our facility.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Volunteer! We can't say enough good things about all our volunteers here at BITS! They are a phenomenal group of people that spend countless hours of their time helping with the horses in our care. Please visit our volunteer page for more information!

Monetary donations are always greatly appreciated! Donations can be made securely through PayPal simply by clicking the link below (if you wish for your donation to be used for a specific purpose, please let us know):

Orders for grain can be placed through our feed stores by calling Calico Creek (Nutrena and Purina brands) at 570-726-3647 or Knittle & Frey (Blue Seal and Triple Crown brands) at 570-323-7554 and  letting them know you wish to purchase grain for Back in the Saddle Horse Adoption (BITS). They are a great group of folks and are very courteous and knowledgeable - they are more than happy to help you place your order!

Become a Horse Angel to help offset costs involved in properly caring for horses in need! Please remember - no donation is to big or to small! The horses are grateful that they have individuals who care about them and their well being! More information on horses needing Angels can be found by visiting the Horse Angel Program page.

We collect Proof of Purchase from NUTRENA and SOUTHERN STATES feeds. We can then turn these in for monetary value so we can provide for the horses in our care!
